Parents' perceptions of autism and their challenges in China

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental characterized by social communication deficits and restricted or repetitive behaviors. Parents play significant role in research, clinical practice policy development on autism. Parents' perceptions of autism can affect not only their own well-being, but also children's development. Nevertheless, few studies have examined the parents’ perception Chinese context. The questionnaire was applied to collect information from 171 families children with ASD, mainly investigate knowledge autistic difficulties family facing. following conclusions were drawn this study: (1) Mother as primary caregiver for ASD; (2) Parents’ ASD various parents good understanding symptoms, causes, age onset interventions, expectations prognosis future life are high; (3) that faced composed low acceptance, pressure concerns about effectiveness interventions children. In consideration mental health parents, it particularly crucial support multifaceted support.
